Update on Work at Rhederlaag

In the Rhederlaag recreation area, work is being carried out on the redevelopment of the North Shore and the Kop van Wentink. With these activities, the area is being further developed for nature and recreation.

Sand extraction from March

The earthworks along the North Shore are almost completed. From March onwards, sand extraction will start along the shoreline. These activities will take approximately 12 months, with a break from 10 July until 1 September during the busiest recreation season.

The sand extraction will create nature-friendly banks and small bays with mooring spots for boats. The sand is extracted using a floating suction dredger and sorted into sand and gravel via an installation on the water. Part of the material will be transported via the loading quay in Lathum, while another part will be shipped via the IJssel to projects elsewhere in the Netherlands.

Recreation remains possible

Outside the working area, recreation on and around the water remains possible. The ferry will remain in operation during the works. For safety reasons, swimming or boating in the work area is not permitted. The work installations and anchor points are marked with buoys.

Expansion of the nature island

Work will also start at the Kop van Wentink around mid-March. The soil released there will be used to expand a nature island in the Valeplas. The island will have gently sloping banks, creating more space for plants and wildlife.

Development of nature and recreation

  • Nature-friendly banks and small bays with mooring spots for boats.
  • Expansion of an existing island into a nature island.
  • A new natural layout of the Kop van Wentink.
  • Additional pitches for our campsite De Veerstal on an existing peninsula (dotted line at number 5 in the second photo).

More information about these activities and the redevelopment of Rhederlaag can be found on the K3 project website.
